From a 41 year-old woman:
Wore braces with headgear to correct overbite from 1973-1975.
Car accident in 1992. Chiropractor diagnosed me and referred me to a dentist that also worked with TMJ. He tried everything he knew and then referred me to someone else.
I kept getting worse and a friend recommended someone who is a specialist in the field. He recommended surgery and referred me to a TMJ surgery specialist. then my insurance company (Intergroup) sent me to my personal care physician who agreed with the surgery.
My neurologist felt it was the only choice left and then the insurance company send me to one of their TMJ specialists who agreed to the surgery. So I had it done in the summer of 93.
I felt very good until I had 2 seizures and 25 ECT treatment for severe depression. Then I noticed loss of range of motion and pain when chewing.
Now a month and a half ago I was in an accident that totaled my car. I hit my lip on the steering wheel. Now I have pain all the ime and I can get only one finger in.
should I seek help again or will it settle down and get better on its own??
