Secretary Thompson Announces His Resignation

HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson resigned on December 3, 2004. JJAMD believes that he did an exemplary job as secretary, but we would have hoped that TMJD was included in his efforts in a more meaningful way, so that the millions of TMJ patients could have shared to a greater extent instead of being essentially the "forgotten" population. Here is his goodbye speech to his staff.

Medicare Prevention and Awareness Coverage at Last....But Why No Mention of TMJD??
The message from Tommy Thompson is included in a press release announcing Medicare's "new prevention-oriented focus." For those approaching Medicare age, you should ask for the new Medicare booklet "Medicare and You." A major feature of this new emphasis is the "Welcome to Medicare" physical exam plus many new services to create awareness of health and prevention of disease. "Closing the prevention gap could save many thousands of lives and billions of dollars in avoidable medical expenses," according to Medicare officials.

For the past 22 years JJAMD has been preaching this same message to a dumb and blind Washington where essentially all medical research and health programs are based on curing disease, but virtually nothing for prevention of disease/disorders and quality of life issues. Finally, Medicare has gotten the message, but the rest of the health care/research bureaucracy still has not. In addition, Medicare still will not touch TMJD. They mention "weak bones" to cover bone density tests, but TMJ patients know all about the weak bones in their oral cavity, for which these millions of patients are left to struggle with lack of proper diagnosis and bizarre invasive treatments to consign them to a life of hell.

Now is the time for all TMJ patients to write to Secretary Tommy G. Thompson [see http://www.hhs.gov] and tell him that we want TMJ covered in the new Medicare Screening Exam. This is a specially good time to do so because you can mention "Jaw Joints - TMJ - Awareness Month" of November as proclaimed in a congressional session and printed in the Congressional Record. Please click on the "Events" button on this website for full information on the "Jaw Joints - TMJ Awareness Month."

You can copy the resolution and send it too, as long as no changes are made as the title is a protected copyright.
