Orthodonture for Children [and adults]
Many TMJ patients include orthodonture in their medical history. In our mission of advancing awareness and prevention of TMJ this article is a good example of how the public is not made aware of the possibility of TMJ resulting from orthodonture. While the article is useful in preventing unneeded invasive therapy, it falls short of informing the parents of the need to be aware that they may be unwittingly consigning their child to a life of TMJ pain and dysfunction if care is not taken. As a further example, the article talks of “realigning the jaw” without mentioning the danger of causing TMJ disorder if extreme care is not taken for the highly invasive procedure
Scientists Report Early Progress in Tissue Engineering Mandibular Condyle
Tissue engineering holds much promise for the future. Although JJAMD fights for current awareness and prevention programs, we also support future progress towards eventual cure. This release from NIDCR addresses such progress, but the patients must remember that such research will take years before there is an actual application to the patients.
JJAMD Does not recommend specific treatments or devices as a matter of long-standing policy. However, we believe that whatever helps TMJ patients is good if it is non-invasive and reversible, and whatever hurts the patients is bad. Until there is scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness, this policy will remain in place. This article, which was published by a manufacturer of the NTI device is an example of the information being supplied to patients and professional alike. We cannot say whether the device is good or bad, but it deserves attention if it helps.
